What Is GEO? A Practical Guide to Generative Engine Optimization

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of structuring content and authority signals so AI systems like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity cite a brand directly inside a generated answer, rather than simply linking to it in a list of results.

The shift matters because a growing share of research-stage queries are now resolved entirely inside an AI answer, with the searcher never clicking through to a traditional results page. A business that doesn't appear inside that answer effectively doesn't exist for that search.

Three factors consistently correlate with stronger AI citation rates: content that directly answers a question within the first few sentences, structured data that clarifies what an entity is and does, and corroboration — the same facts appearing consistently across multiple credible, independent sources.

Getting started doesn't require abandoning traditional SEO. The strongest GEO programs build on an already healthy technical and content foundation, then restructure priority pages into an answer-first format and invest in third-party citations that reinforce topical authority.
